Happy styling!

  1. Prep your hair.
  2. Set the right temperature on your irons.
  3. Section your hair for full head coverage.
  4. Start curling.
  5. Summary.

Before you even think about grabbing your straightening irons, prep your hair properly! Start by applying a heat protection spray or cream to shield your strands from any heat damage. Then, blow-dry your hair thoroughly, ensuring it’s completely dry and smooth. If you want a super sleek finish, use a blow-dryer nozzle to help smooth out frizz.

For reference, I’m using the EVY Professional BOSS Digi-Force Dryer, which took home the award for Best Electrical Tool at the 2024 Australian Hair Industry Awards.

Once your hair is dry, it’s time to set your straightening irons to the right temperature. If your hair is thick like mine, I recommend setting your irons to about 200°.

For fine hair, especially very blonde hair, set your straighteners to a lower temperature (approx. 180°) to avoid damage. Just remember: if the temperature is too low for your hair type, the curls might not hold!

While your straightening irons are heating up, section your hair using clips or bands. Smaller sections will give you tighter curls, while larger sections will create looser, wavy locks.

To make sectioning easier, try using two mirrors to see the back of your head!

Now for the fun part—curling!

Start with the bottom layers of your hair and take the first section. Placing your straighteners close to the roots, gently pull and turn the irons through the section of hair toward the tips. Keep a steady pace as you glide, ensuring the curl forms naturally. When you reach the ends, release your hair from the irons.

Feel free to go over the same section more than once if the desired curl has not been achieved, but be careful not to damage your hair with overheating.

For a more relaxed, beach wave look, try starting the curl further down the section, away from the roots. This will give you softer waves instead of tight curls.

Alternatively, if you’re after a looser curl, you might like try the EVY Professional iQ-OneGlide 1.5″ straightening irons.
